CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2011

Awards Program Objective

The objective of the awards program is to recognize and celebrate excellence in the work of CAHP members and promote understanding and appreciation of our cultural heritage. The conservation work of submitted entries shall comply with Parks Canada Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, which are conservation principles of best practice.

There are ten award categories:

  1. Craftsmanship
  2. Preservation of A Heritage Building or Complex
  3. Adaptive Reuse
  4. Preservation of A Heritage Landscape
  5. Heritage Planning
  6. Heritage Communication
  7. Environmentally Sustainable Heritage Building or Landscape Intervention
  8. Built Heritage Conservation of the Modern Era
  9. Heritage Evaluation Document
  10. Lifetime Achievement


  • Only CAHP Professional and Intern members may submit entries.

  • Projects and work submissions are to have been completed between 2004 and 2011. Submissions are not to include works in progress.

  • A CAHP Professional Member (not Intern Member) must have played a significant role in the project.

Submission Procedure and Deadlines

  • Right click to save the 2011 Awards entry form to your desktop HERE

  • Email the Awards entry form to the CAHP office as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, July 6, 2011 no later than 6:00 pm EST.

  • Send 2 CDs with submittal materials and submission cheque by Wednesday, July 6, 2011 no later than 6:00 pm EST.



Submission Application Fee

The application fee per submission is $50.00 payable to 'CAHP' by cheque. There is no limit to the number of submissions permitted.


Submittal Materials

Send 2 CD copies of the Awards Project Report clearly labeled with the Award Category and Project Title.

The Awards Project Report will be submitted in one pdf file. The report will include:

  • An project introduction and overview; including historical reference; background; location; context etc.

  • An explanation of project goals.

  • A detailed account of how the project was managed and implemented from conception to completion.

  • Any other relevant details about the scope of work, materials, challenges.

  • A project conclusion.

  • 10 photographs or more within the report, including two or more descriptive pairs of photos, 'before and after conservation'. Jpegs should be 100 dpi to 300 dpi resolution. Include photo credits if needed and brief description lines for each photo.

  • Relevant drawings or other visuals.

  • In addition to the Report, provide at least 2 print quality jpeg photos illustrating the completed work (300 dpi minimum to 600 dpi maximum resolution).

  • Provide 1 printed copy of your report in your submission package.

Note: The description or textual portion of all reports should be a minimum of 750 words to a maximum of 1,000 words.

Instructions to Courier

Award Posters

One complimentary award poster copy is provided for any winning submission. Each additional copy is $20. Up to a maximum of 3 copies may be requested.




Award Categories

1. Craftsmanship

This award recognizes specialized restoration skills and expertise in traditional construction technologies.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • The project report should identify the material or the technology preserved and conserved.

  • Describe the historic background of the project, conservation issues, restoration processes, methods and procedures, and any other relevant information.

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



2. Preservation of A Heritage Building or
    Complex

This award honours outstanding demonstrations of preservation techniques and principles in the restoration of a building or complex.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • The project report should identify location, use, historical background and cultural significance.

  • Describe conservation issues, the restoration process, methods and procedures and any other relevant information.

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



3. Adaptive Reuse

This award recognizes exceptional projects that integrate new use(s) into a heritage building or complex.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • The project report should identify location, historical background and cultural significance.

  • Explain why the original building use cannot be sustained.

  • Describe the appropriateness of the new use, continued relevance of the heritage component, conservation issues, revitalization processes, methods and procedures and other relevant information

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



4. Preservation of A Heritage Landscape

This award celebrates the conservation of a significant heritage landscape.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Identify the location, historic background and cultural significance of your project.

  • Describe conservation issues, restoration process, methods and procedures and other relevant information

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



5. Heritage Planning

This award recognizes excellence in heritage conservation and land use planning.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Describe the location, objectives and recommendations of the project.

  • Identify significant challenges and means of resolution. Discuss unique distinguishing features of the methodology, approach and/or content of this study.

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



6. Heritage Communication

This award celebrates significant contributions in the form of written documents, papers, books, museum displays or other forms of communication.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Provide a complete description of the project outlining (as applicable) the project background, context, purpose, intended audience, methods of research, presentation strategy, roles of key players, nature of heritage contribution, and other relevant information.

  • Provide samples of representative material together with an overall view of the project. (including physical context, if applicable)


  • Submit sufficient information to clearly explain and exhibit the project.

  • Provide 2 copies of the book or other publication/documentation.(Please advise Awards Coordinator if this request is not feasible)

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



7. Environmentally Sustainable Heritage
    Building or Landscape Intervention

This award recognizes excellence in convservation rehabilitation and/or adaptive reuses of a historic place in which sensitivity to historic features is supported and complimented by responsible environmental design.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Identify location, historic background, and cultural significance of project.(minimum 750 to a maximum of 1,000 words)

  • Provide an explanation of how heritage features of the historic place were defined and restored or rehabilitated to increase energy efficiency.

  • Explain how new work compliments the heritage value of the building and does so in ways that are environmentally sustainable; how cultural and natural conservation goals were integrated.

  • Describe how design and building functionality minimizes the environmental footprint of the structure and site.

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



8. Built Heritage Conservation of the
    Modern Era

This award honours outstanding demonstrations of conservation techniques and principles in the conservation of built heritage of the Modern Era in Canada, starting around 1930.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Identify the conservation of materials and construction of this era that may have been experimental and less durable and not designed for longevity.

  • The conservation approach must respect the integrity of its original design, character-defining elements, function and/or setting, insofar as each of these was an important part of its overall design intention and present character, rather than the strict conservation of experimental materials and workmanship where technically not recommended.

  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



9. Heritage Evaluation Document

This award honours the evaluation of a heritage place which provides an understanding of character-defining elements and how they contribute to the heritage value of a historic building, engineering site, archaeological site, landscape, cultural landscape. This could also include a cultural Heritage Impact Statement (CHIS) for a significant intervention to a historic place.

Report Submission Requirements:

  • Provide a detailed account about the heritage value of the place. Describe the aesthetic, historic, scientific, cultural, social or spiritual importance or significance for past, present and future generations.

  • Illustrate the heritage value of the historic place and describe its character-defining materials, forms, location, spatial configurations, uses and cultural associations or meanings. Include illustrations and photos that supported the evaluation process.

  • Describe your investigation and documentation regarding site conditions and changes and related historic research.

  • Describe the physical condition of the site and explain how you determined a minimal amount of appropriate intervention required.

  • For CHIS submissions, illustrate/describe those elements of the intervention that significantly served to warrant the impact evaluation recommendation, and why.

  • Identify the recommendations that were put in place to protect and maintain the heritage elements.


  • Include items specified under Submittal Materials.



10. Lifetime Achievement

This award honours a heritage professional who has made an outstanding contribution to the conservation of heritage in Canada over a period of not less than twenty years. (Please consult with Jodi Franklin admin@cahp-acecp.ca to discuss details if your submission is chosen)

Report Submission Requirements:

  • The name, address, telephone number and email address of the person submitting the nomination.


  • Include a description of the nominee's pertinent contribution and activities. (500 - 700 words)


  • Provide a minimum of 2 testimonials from the community.


  • Provide biographical notes about the nominee, including a list of projects with which he/she has been involved.


  • Include a minimum of 2 nominee photos with a minimum of 300 dpi resolution in jpeg format.


  • Provide a minimum of 8 colour jpegs of activities or projects in which the nominee has been involved. Photos should be in jpeg format with a minimum resolution of 72 dpi for PowerPoint slides and a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for print purposes (if applicable).


  • Support material for Power Point Presentation (e.g. scans of news clippings, letters of recommendation and other photographs.


  • Invitation list for family and friends


Note: Winning submissions will be presented at the awards ceremony and subsequently listed on the CAHP Awards web page. All materials submitted will be kept by CAHP for publication, exhibition and/or archival purposes.
