Project Description:

The stately Beaux Arts building of Douglas Memorial Hall was built in 1911 as an auditorium of a hospital for the insane. Today the facility is owned by the Douglas teaching hospital associated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. Despite threats of demolition, the building was restored and rehabilitated to provide space for community out reach programs, patient entertainment and academic conference space. Public washrooms and an elevator were added, and new HVAC systems were carefully coordinated to be as discrete as possible.

Jury Comments

‘Thank goodness this building was saved!’
