Professional membership provides the right to vote in all matters of the association, to be elected to office, and to receive all membership benefits. Their specialization and description of expertise is published on the CAHP web site and directory. Professional members may use the acronym CAHP after their names.

Requirements for Professional Membership:

  1. A post graduate degree and three (3) years relevant heritage work experience. OR

  2. An undergraduate degree and five (5) years relevant heritage work experience. The degree mentioned in items 1. and 2. above and in a field allied to the planning, preservation, wise use and/or better understanding of heritage resources such as:
    • Archaeology/Anthropology;
    • Architecture;Planning;
    • Archival Science;
    • Conservation or Preservation;
    • Engineering (Civil/Structural);
    • Fine Arts;
    • Landscape Architecture;
    • Museum Studies;
    • Planning;
    • Social Sciences (History, Geography);
    • OR

  3. A demonstrated experience in heritage conservation and or preservation gained through seven years of employment in heritage conservation and/or preservation and currently employed in that field.


  4. AND

  5. abide by CAHP's Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics.

Please note that all persons submitting under any of the outlined specializations would be subject to the same rigorous requirements for admission into CAHP, be it education, sponsorship and peer review, as well as ethics.

Canadian experience pre-requisite: approximately one-third of a Professional members' experience is Canadian or their academic degree conferred from a Canadian institution.

Professional membership fees are currently $280 per year.

Intern members are acquiring relevant experience to become eligible for Professional membership. An Intern has completed their studies and is currently employed or consulting in the heritage field. Intern membership can be held for a maximum of five years after which the member may apply as a Professional member or is removed from the membership rolls. An intern may not use the acronym CAHP after their name as this privilege is reserved for CAHP Professional status. Each year, an intern must maintain a log of their heritage work,heritage conferences and workshops attended and submit their log to the CAHP Membership Review Committee. Intern members receive regular emails regarding conferences, job postings and the e-forum newsletter. Upon completing the requirements for Professional membership an intern may request to apply for Professional status. Intern members are not listed on the directory and are welcome to attend the annual AGM but are not permitted to vote or stand for office.

Intern membership fees are $170 per year.

Inactive or Retired members were previously Professional members and are not currently employed or consulting in the heritage field. Their specialization and textual description is not published on the web site or in the CAHP directory. Inactive and Retired members are posted in a separate section of the web site and directory. Should an Inactive or Retired member begin working in the heritage field, they are obligated to inform CAHP of their change in status. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action determined by the Board. An Intern or Retired member may not vote, be elected or appointed to the Board or sit on committees, though they are encouraged to volunteer for CAHP.

Inactive or Retired membership fees are $50 per year.

Student membership is available to those who are currently enrolled in a post secondary education program full time or part time and not employed or consulting in the heritage field. Student members have no voting privileges and cannot be elected/appointed to the Board or sit on committees, although they are encouraged to volunteer for CAHP.

Student membership fees are $25 per year.

Subscription membership is open to individuals or institutions that would like to receive information but cannot be, or do not wish to be, Professional members. A Subscriber receives a copy of the FORUM newsletter but has no other rights or privileges. Subscribers may not vote, be elected/appointed to the Board or sit on committees.

Subscription membership fees are $50 per year.
